Back of the box:

In this supernatural thriller penned by Darren Aronofsky, an American
submarine stumbles upon a downed British hospital ship while navigating
treacherous waters during World War II. After rescuing the ship's three
remaining survivors, Lt. Brice (Bruce Greenwood) and his men discover
that true danger may not come from the Germans pursuing them, but
rather from a ghostly threat that lurks far below, or even within, the
submarine itself.
The Bloody Truth:

Below hit theaters during a run of haunted ship films headlined by the film
Ghost Ship. Thanks to an utter lack of promotion Below drifted under the
radar and was nearly ignored while sharing theater space with the larger
pop horror title.

Unfortunately, in and out of the theater in weeks, Below was offering its few
watchers a compact and haunting story of betrayal, fear and revenge all
on the decks of a WWII US submarine.

The film does use a handful of generic CGI based jump scares that hurt
the atmosphere slightly, but these come right along with other thoroughly
creepy moments that remain effective today. Also some might find the
story a bit generic even if they manage to miss the plot twists.

In the same hand Below’s strength comes from its cast and a tight script
that puts you in the mind of the sailors and each of their common and
unique fears.  Below manages to rise above your common pop horror film
yet safely remains generic enough to please most audiences.

Horror fans that like a little mystery and plot twisting should find much to
enjoy in this little seen, yet well crafted film.
